LOCATION SCOUTING
1 We originally wanted to use a ghost town building to shoot the Miners’ Wives sleeping in, but ended up finding these real 1800s miners’ dugouts near the town of Shoshone, just south of Death Valley, CA. 2 As well as gold and silver, miners excavated borax, used in cleaning products. They shipped it out by mule train. (Incidentally, Charles Manson and his posse also used to hang out here).
3 To keep cool in the scorching nights, the miners slept literally inside the hills. The Shoshone had been using borax for thousands of years already. 4 Lara Martin, Producer, is pleased to have secured the location.
5i On our scout trips we visited the tourist ghost town of Calico, CA. The place was too commercialized to use. These notices have been copied from records found in similar towns. 5ii Bottles not broken in bar brawls were often used to build houses!
5iii Close-Up of a bottle wall. 6 This wagon, like in Wild West, is similar to those used by the ill-fated ‘49ers’, some of the first Europeans to traverse Death Valley in 1849. "
