DESERT LIGHT
1 Many shots had to be filmed at dawn to catch the beautiful, mauve light. This meant driving long distances into the middle of nowhere and arriving in the cold darkness. (Producer: Lara Martin) 2 Light and color changes rapidly at dawn in the Great Basin desert, so fast work is necessary with camera set- up and film loading. (Director/ DP: Hannah Beadman)
3 A raven’s eye view of Death Valley floor, from Dante’s Peak, seen in the opening shot of Wild West. 4 Later, down on Death Valley’s floor at Badwater, the lowest point below sea level in US. The hot springs here have helped create mineral-encrusted salt flats where a rare type of snail lives. Throughout most of the Great Basin, water remains just below the ground.
